26 August 1995 — a memorandum of cooperation was signed between Uzbekistan and UNESCO

UNESCO — the United Nations specialized agency for education, science, and culture — was established in 1945. Its main goal is to foster the development of education, science, and culture and to strengthen peace through international cooperation. UNESCO works globally to safeguard cultural heritage, spread modern knowledge, and enhance mutual understanding among nations.

On 26 August 1995, in Tashkent, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Government of Uzbekistan and UNESCO.

This document laid the foundation for:

⚫️ International recognition of Uzbekistan’s historical monuments;

⚫️ Implementation of joint projects in the fields of education, science, and culture;

⚫️ Ensuring a global approach to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, and carrying out joint programs.

As a result of this cooperation, cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva were included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

With UNESCO’s support, numerous historical monuments in Uzbekistan were restored, scientific expeditions were conducted, and educational projects were launched.

This date is remembered as one of the historic milestones when Uzbekistan confidently stepped onto the world stage.
