The renowned artist Igor Savitsky was born 110 years ago

Today marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Igor Vitalyevich Savitsky — an artist, collector, and museum founder who holds a special place in the history of modern Uzbek art and culture.

He rendered invaluable service not only in preserving artisanship but also in safeguarding and researching 20th-century avant-garde art, the Uzbek national school of painting, folk applied arts, and archaeological artifacts.

The Karakalpak State Museum of Art in Nukus — home to one of the world’s largest collections of modernist and avant-garde art — was established thanks to Savitsky’s initiative and unwavering dedication. He tirelessly collected banned and forgotten works, preserved them, and gave them new life.

Today, his legacy is highly esteemed not only in Nukus but also by museum professionals and art enthusiasts around the world.
