New Media Project by the Center of Islamic Civilization: “Mulkat Agha — patron of knowledge and enlightenment”
Among the prominent female figures who left an indelible mark on Islamic history, Mulkat Agha Begim holds a special place. Her life and dedication to enlightenment remain a source of inspiration even today.
Originally named Mulk Agha, this noblewoman lived during the Timurid dynasty. She is remembered not only as the mother of princes but also as a patron of knowledge and enlightenment, and as a woman who laid the foundations for traditions of social architecture. She initiated numerous charitable and educational constructions in Herat and Balkh, including hospitals, a “Dar al-Hadith” khanqah, two bathhouses, a caravanserai, and a madrasa.
Mulkat Agha Begim provided extensive support to students, hadith scholars, and religious scholars, considering the care of the learned to be her noble duty. She passed away in Kabul in 1440 and, according to her will, was buried in the madrasa she had commissioned in Balkh.
The media project titled “Mulkat Agha — Patron of knowledge and enlightenment”, implemented by the Center of Islamic Civilization, aims to present the queen’s life and work to the wider public and to revive her spiritual legacy.
