A historic initiative is being implemented in Uzbekistan

At the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, a Calligraphy School is being established with the aim of preserving the art of calligraphy, developing it on a scientific basis, and transmitting it to the younger generation.

The latest discussions and meetings dedicated to this initiative were attended by the leadership of the Center, renowned calligraphers, specialists, project coordinators, and representatives of partner organizations.

Culture, knowledge, and spirituality in harmony

As emphasized during the meeting, calligraphy is not only an integral part of Islamic traditions connected with the sacred sciences of the Qur’an, but also a reflection of our nation’s aesthetic taste and artistic worldview. In today’s era of globalization, integrating this art form with modern technologies and using it as a means of aesthetic education for youth is regarded as an essential task.

Concept and infrastructure of the school

The purpose of establishing the Calligraphy School is not only to teach calligraphy but also to create a creative environment. For this reason, five rooms on the second floor of the Center of Islamic Civilization building will be specially equipped and transformed into a multifunctional space. Here, classes, exhibitions, masterclasses, and international events can be held.

The activities of the Calligraphy School will be organized in the following areas:

Educational programs — based on the traditional master-apprentice system, implemented through gradual skill examinations.

Workshops — equipped with modern technology, interactive boards, and presentation tools.

Subjects — in addition to calligraphy, courses will include illumination, Qur’an manuscript studies, and mus’haf restoration.

Interior design — developed on the basis of Eastern architecture and calligraphic ornamentation.

International cooperation and advisory council

The meeting also put forward concrete proposals for ensuring the school’s international reputation and establishing cooperation with major organizations:

In partnership with TURKSOY and the World Islamic Organization, calligraphers from the Turkic world will be engaged.

International exhibitions and competitions will be held.

An International Calligraphy Advisory Council will be established, consisting of leading global calligraphers, art historians, and patrons.

The first step toward a historic project

Within the framework of the “New Uzbekistan Qur’an” project initiated by the head of state:

A competition will be held among calligraphers worldwide. From the winners, 114 calligraphers who achieve the highest results will each copy one surah in Naskh script, chosen by lot.

Pages will be decorated with Uzbek ornamental patterns.

Each surah will be presented as a separate exhibition.

A “National Calligraphy Award” will be instituted within the competition.

According to the meeting participants, these efforts represent the first step toward a historic project.

Shaykh Abdulaziz Mansur, senior researcher at the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, stated:

“The opening of the Calligraphy School at the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan is a practical expression of our reverence for the Word of the Qur’an. This art is service through patience, devotion, and respect for the sacred word. The copying of 114 surahs by 114 calligraphers in this very school will become a vivid example of the unity of thought, art, and faith”.

The proposals and agreements voiced at the discussion demonstrated that the Calligraphy School is designed not only as a local but also as an international scientific and creative hub. This initiative is of great importance in reviving the art of calligraphy in Uzbekistan, nurturing young talents, and safeguarding national heritage.

Such projects contribute to strengthening the cultural and educational leadership role of the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, which is being developed under the initiative of the President.
