A new development in uzbek Science: Plans to create the history of numismatics

The Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan plans to create exhibitions dedicated to the numismatic history of our country. As part of the Uzbek numismatics history project, implemented under the initiative of the Center, the work is being carried out by Sergey Laptev, a researcher from the Miho Museum of Japan:

“We have started to compile a list of coins minted in the territory of Uzbekistan before Islam by studying private collections, reaching out to museums worldwide, and participating in international auctions to find and create copies of these coins, which will be included in the exhibition. This is the main task, and as a result, we plan to publish a book-album as the best outcome."

The territory of Uzbekistan played an important role in trade along the Great Silk Road among Central Asian countries. It is also known that during various historical periods, such as in Khwarezm, Bactria, and Sogdiana, the rulers of these ancient states minted their coins for trade. This indicates the existence of coin minting in the ancient administrative system long before Islam. However, there is insufficient information about the coins minted during this period. Therefore, the implementation of the project on the history of Uzbek numismatics is expected to be an important contribution to the science of Uzbekistan.

It is worth noting that numismatics is the study of coins. Numismatics examines the images on coins, inscriptions, their weight, the metal from which they are made, their use in monetary circulation, and the history of coin minting.
