The Usman Mus'haf is being digitized: an electronic version and a facsimile edition are currently in development
Uzbekistan is currently implementing another major research initiative aimed at the comprehensive study, preservation, and broad public presentation of sacred Islamic sources. At the initiative of the Center of Islamic Civilization in Tashkent, large-scale research is being carried out on one of the oldest known copies of the Quran in the world — the Usman Mus'haf, which is preserved in Uzbekistan.
One of the core components of this project is an in-depth scientific analysis of the text of the Usman Mus'haf and the Great Langar Quran, including the study of the ink, script styles, and restoration methods based on carbon dating. This will help determine the historical period of the Quran, its writing style, and the materials used.
As a result of this research, a digital version of the Usman Mus'haf will be created. This electronic edition will be featured in the Quran Hall of the Center of Islamic Civilization through interactive monitors, allowing visitors to virtually turn the pages of the manuscript.
In addition, a highly accurate facsimile edition of the Mus'haf will be prepared, faithfully reproducing the original’s shape, color, and text, and will be supplemented with scholarly and historical commentary.
This project is being carried out to promote and preserve Islamic heritage in Uzbekistan and to further enrich the exhibition of the Center of Islamic Civilization. As a result, not only the citizens of Uzbekistan, but Muslims around the world will gain a unique opportunity to engage with one of the most ancient and revered copies of the Quran.
