In his time, he was one of the leading figures in the country’s literary and cultural landscape. A multifaceted creator — poet, translator, playwright, and public figure — Gafur Gulyam earned widespread recognition.
His life and work are of not only literary but also moral and educational importance, serving as a valuable and exemplary model for every Uzbek reader.
Gafur Gulyam was born on May 10, 1903, in Tashkent. From an early age, he experienced the hardships of life, yet his thirst for knowledge and passion for creativity led him to achieve remarkable accomplishments. He dedicated his life to literature, with his first works appearing in print in the 1920s.
During the 1930s and 1940s, he was highly productive and made a significant contribution to the development of Uzbek poetry, raising it to a new level. His poems expressing the pain and tragedy of war further heightened his popularity.
His work "Shum Bola" ("The Naughty Boy") remains one of the most prominent pieces of Uzbek children’s literature. In many of his writings, pressing social issues of the time are skillfully addressed through gentle irony and humor.
Gafur Gulyam left an indelible mark on the history of Uzbek literature through his invaluable works, folk-inspired creations, and deep love for artistic expression.
At the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, his life and creative legacy will be studied alongside other prominent representatives of 20th-century Uzbek literature. Currently, researchers at the Alisher Navoi State Museum of Literature are examining Gafur Gulyam’s life and works to select suitable materials for the exhibition. Another research team at the Center is in talks to feature exhibits related to Gafur Gulyam’s legacy from his house-museum.
